"Why are these thresholds so important?" The Aare is no ordinary river, but a precisely controlled system. When the locks in Thun are opened, the water level in Uttigen can rise dramatically within a short period of time. Safety Limits: When Does It Become Critical?
Safety is our top priority. We continuously monitor the flow rate of the Aare River and apply the following rules for our rentals:
At or above 275 m³/s (flood conditions): Operations are suspended entirely. The current is too dangerous.
At or above 225 m³/s: Kayak rentals are no longer available. Only inflatable boats are permitted.
At flow rates of 200 m³/s or higher: Tubes and our "Septipus" must remain on shore. Only inflatable boats and kayaks are permitted on the river.
Below 200 m³/s: Anything goes—the ideal conditions for all types of boats.
Less than 100 m³/s (late summer): Very low water level. The Aare becomes calmer, but the channeling keeps the current smooth.
Important tips on the route and the exit
The Best Stops: Where to Enjoy Your Trip
It is possible to drive the entire route without stopping, but the experience really comes alive with the stops along the way. Here are our recommendations along the route:
Ristorante Al Fiume / Thalgut (about 30 min. from Uttigen): The perfect first stop for a quick bite. They serve paninis, cold drinks, and pizza. Especially convenient: They offer takeout and will even pick you up right by the river.
Parkbad Münsingen (Right in the middle): Here you’ll find classic poolside fare like salads, burgers, and fries. It’s the perfect spot for a longer break at halftime.
Campagna Restaurant, Belp (about 15 min. from Münsingen): Famous for its large terrace right next to the Aare Islands. A great place to stretch your legs for a bit.
Wyderwasser (about 15 min. past Münsingen): Under the large bridge, toward the islands on the right. A popular spot for a quick dip in calmer waters.
Serini Restaurant (Right by the Eichholz exit): Our personal favorite! Perfect for wrapping up the tour with house-brewed beer and cider. Highly recommended for group bookings as well.
Planning a company outing or a bachelor/bachelorette party? Then it’s best to contact Restaurant Serini in advance. It’s much more relaxing to celebrate with a glass of house-brewed cider in hand than to be soaking wet and having to scramble to find a free table with 20 people!

Our time estimates are based on disembarking at Eichholz. This is the official and safest endpoint for rental boats.
Private boats: If you continue on to Marzili, expect to spend an additional 20 minutes on the water.
The type of boat determines the speed
Inflatable kayaks: Due to their lighter weight and greater resistance, inflatable kayaks are more susceptible to wind and eddies. Always allow for an extra 30 minutes or so compared to a rubber dinghy.
Kayaks & SUPs: If you paddle consistently, you’ll be much faster. You’ll usually reach your destination 30 minutes earlier than those in inflatable boats.
Bottom line: Plan your day properly
The Aareboat trip is a delightful experience. Even though the actual travel time is often less than 3 hours, we recommend setting aside a total of 5 to 6 hours for the trip, including breaks and preparation.
