Before you set out on the Aare, it is essential to check the current flow rate (m³/s). But while private boaters often only pay attention to the weather, we as professionals look at the complex regulation of Lake Thun.

As pioneers on the Aare (since 2007), we know that the Aare is no ordinary river, but a precisely controlled system. Here we explain our limits and why the locks in Thun influence your adventure.

Our safety limits (Thun measuring station, Schwellenpromenade)

We check the water levels in Thun several times a day. Depending on the flow rate volume, our safety levels come into effect:

Flow rate (m³/s) Status & Measures
Up to 200 Ideal conditions. All boats, tubes, SUPs, and kayaks in use.
200–250 Restricted. Only rafts. Tubes & SUPs canceled.
250–300 Warning. Rafts only. Final decision rests with the customer.
Over 300 Stop. All bookings will be canceled without exception.

The "invisible" risk: How lake regulation works

Guests often don't understand why we cancel rentals when the sun is shining. The reason lies in the strategic management of Lake Thun by the Office for Water and Waste (AWA):

  1. Preventive lowering: When heavy rainfall is forecast in the Bernese Oberland, the canton lowers the water level of Lake Thun by 10 to 20 centimeters as a preventive measure. This creates space (retention volume) for the expected water masses from the Kander and other tributaries. This means that the Aare river rises significantly in Uttigen before the first raindrops fall.

  2. The flood relief tunnel (HES): If the historic mill and Scherzlig sluices are not sufficient, the 1.2 km long relief tunnel is also activated. This can divert an additional 100 m³/s into the Aare.

  3. Consideration for downstream areas: Regulation in Thun is a balancing act. Sometimes the flow in Thun is reduced to prevent flooding in Bern, and later (often when the weather is fine) increased again.

  4. Our insider advantage: We are connected to an exclusive emergency network. As soon as the decision is made to open the floodgates or the tunnel further, we receive a phone call. We know two hours in advance that the water level will rise significantly.

The professional advantage: Private individuals are often surprised by the sudden increase in current. As our guests, you are protected by our direct prior knowledge—we will inform you before the wave reaches Uttigen.

The Uttigerschwelle: Your added security

Another advantage with us: our location is below the Uttigen wave. While private boaters in Thun often fail at this dangerous wave when the water level is high, your tour with us starts in safe waters.
